We are beginning our study of the rain forest. We will be learning about all the layers of the rainforest and the animals that live there, as well as the people who make their homes in the rainforest. We begin at the top of the rainforest- the emergent layer- and learn about the beautiful butterflies and the eagles that live there. This week we have made beautiful Morpho butterflies to put on our rainforest that is springing up in the classroom and to wear !

We made lots of rainsticks and made cookies for the spring fair last week. This week we have been learning about parrots and toucans. We have beautiful birds on our bulletin board and hanging on our tree.

We are learning more about the animals that live in the canopy. We've added more parrots and toucans and are making sloths and monkeys, too. We read "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak and made our own wild things to go on our door. Some of the pictures may look like they are upside down, but the K-Kids got to decide where and how to place their creation on the door, for the "wild rumpus".

Our rainforest bulletin board is beginning to fill up with many different animals!

Our big sloths now have babies!

We added more monkeys, lizards, frogs and bromeliads to our rainforest.

Many parents often ask if their child did one of the arts and crafts projects we offered during the week. Sometimes these are "have tos", but most of the time they are choices. There are many other activities to try during our choice time! We have children at the art tables, the easels, writing and drawing, computers, the sand table, dramatic play and more!

We are learning about some of the animals that live in the understory this week. Snakes were a big hit! Our canopy is really filling up with all sorts of creatures. We also took pictures of our "sloths" on the playground and have them hanging on our door.

We have finally almost finshed our rainforest quilt. We used our handprints to make jaguars and made beautiful toucans by carefully listening to the directions.
